Sandwich, John Montagu, Earl of, 1718-1792
At the time of the letters Sandwich was the first Lord of the Admiralty. Douglas was editor of Cook's journals; Shepherd was an astronomer; Harris was British Ambassador at St. Petersberg; Burney was a friend of Sandwich and father of James; King was captain of the Discovery after the death of Clerke; Barrington was a lawyer.
