Drake, Francis Marion, 1830-1903
Marion Francis Drake served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 36th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. In 1895 he was nominated by the Republican party for Governor of Iowa. He was elected in 1895 and served from 1896 through 1898. He endowed Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Other family members associated with this collection include William H. Drake who died during the Civil War while serving with the 2nd Iowa Infantry Regiment, Company G and John A. Drake, father of Francis, founder of Drakeville, Iowa and a Davis County representative to the 4th Iowa General Assembly.
