B. Cleveland, Ohio, 1905; graduated from Antioch College in 1932; Ph. D. from Ohio State University; joined the Antioch Press as a printer and editor; a founder of The Peacemakers, a movement of revolutionary pacifists begun in Chicago in 1948; sailed to North Vietnam with other Quakers on the yacht Phoenix; established a personal vigil and fast at the gates of the White House, protesting the war; advocate of war-tax resistance; member of A Quaker Action Group, the American Friends Service Committee, the Committee for Nonviolent Action, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation; d. August 31, 1990, Yellow Springs, Ohio.
