Alfvén, Hannes, 1908-1995
Astrophysicist who contributed significantly to advances in fields of magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, geophysics, thermonuclear reaction, and cosmology. Alfven shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics with Louis Neel. He formulated several controversial explanations of the behavior of interstellar magnetic fields, which undermined the "big bang" theory of the creation of the universe. Though initially viewed with great skepticism, Alfven's theories came to have a revolutionizing influence on astrophysics and geophyics. He was also an advocate for the destruction of nuclear armanments, a concern he shared with Harold Urey and other scientists. During the last decades of his life, Alfven held a joint teaching / research appointment at the University of California, San Diego and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
