Bell, Margaret Elizabeth, 1898-

Margaret E. Bell (1898-1990) was a third-generation Alaskan. Born at Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island, where her father owned a salmon saltery, she was raised in Southeast Alaska and Washington State. Her first book, "Pirates of Icy Strait," was published in 1942. After a stint with the Red Cross on Attu Island during World War II, she took up residence at Loring, Alaska, to resume her writing career. The author of many books for young people, most of them set in Alaska, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of Alaska. Though she went by her husband's surname, Wiks, in private life, all of her publications were under her maiden name.
