Avery, William Henry, 1911-2009
William H. Avery was born in Clay County, attended Wakefield High School, and graduated from the Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (Kansas State University). He was a farmer and rancher, married, and had four children. He was elected as a Republican to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1950, serving until 1955. William Avery was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1954 and served until 1965. Mr. Avery was elected as the 37th Governor of Kansas in 1964 serving for one term. Afterwards, he returned to private life in Wichita and was with Garvey Enterprises, as well as the Clinton and Real Oil Companies.
