Taylor, Harold, 1914-1993

Harold Taylor (1914-1993) was appointed the third president of Sarah Lawrence College at the age of 30 in 1945. He is known as one of the most provocative and original thinkers in the field of American education. While at Sarah Lawrence College, Taylor also taught philosophy at Sarah Lawrence and the New School for Social Research. During his tenure at Sarah Lawrence, Taylor developed a number of experimental educational programs and launched an experimental teacher preparation program. During attacks on academic freedom by the American Legion and the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, Taylor was a vigorous leader in the struggle to maintain academic freedom. Taylor retired from Sarah Lawrence in 1959. He died in 1993.
