Deering Lumber Company
Lumber company in Biddeford, Me., founded by Joseph G. Deering in 1866; son Frank Cutter Deering joined the business and it become known as J.G. Deering & Son; in 1920 Joseph Godfrey Deering, grandson of the original founder was general manager, becoming president in 1939; Godfrey Company (owned by Joseph G. Deering personally) was formed in 1958 after the sale of J.G. Deering & Son to Thomas Armstrong; at this time J.G. Deering & Son was renamed Deering Lumber Company; Godfrey Company continued to be involved with timber and lumber operations until the 1960s; Saco River Driving Company was wood operation and river subsidiary of J.G. Deering & Son; this latter was liquidated in 1959.
