Swift, Eben, 1854-1938
Born in 1854. Swift was in the U.S. Army as Second Lieutenant, 5th Cavlary (1876), 1st Lieutenant (1884), Captain (1893), Major (1903), Lt. Colonel (1911), Colonel (1912), Brig. General (1916), Major General (1917). He served in the Indian campaigns and in various western posts (1870's-1880's); commanded troops in Cuba and Puerto Rico (1898-99); became an instructor at Infantry and Cavalry School (1904-06) and Army War College (1906-10) and observed the Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria; stationed in the Philippines (1911-12) and was Chief of Staff of the Western Dept. (1914-16).
He commanded the 2nd Cavalry Brigade in Mexico (1917) and was post commander of Fort Gordon (1917). Was an observer in France (1918) and commanded A.E.F. troops in Italy (1918). Although retired in 1918 he returned to active duty (1919-1920) to teach R.O.T.C. units. Became an active military writer and lecturer, died in 1936.
