Valencourt, James Roy, 1927-2004
J. Roy Valencourt was born in Manistee County, Michigan, in 1927 and earned a Ph. D. in New Testament from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Commission on Race Relations of the National Council of Churches (NCC) enlisted him to serve as a spiritual counselor for civil rights workers and NCC staff participating in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Project. Most of his time was spent counseling in Columbus, Mississippi.
