Washington Agricultural Literary Society (State College, Pa.)
The students of the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania (now Penn State University) petitioned to organize literary societies. The Washington Agricultural Literary Society formed on 4 March 1859; it dropped Agricultural from its name in 1869. The trustees granted money to procure books for its library. By the 1890s social fraternities, engineering societies, athletic groups, music and drama clubs had become popular and WLS membership declined; it dissolved in June 1895.
