Brown, John, 1771-1850

John Brown (Johannes Braun), 1771-1850, was one of the best educated clergymen of his time in western Virginia. Born near Bremen, Germany, he came to the United States in 1797, becoming the leading minister of the German Reformed Church in Virginia. Besides his "Treatise" (published by Laurenz Wartmann of Rockingham County), he translated excerpts from Jefferson on slavery, and was influential in the Rockingham County pauper school system, the forerunner of today's public school system in that county.
