Allgates (Estate)
The Allgates estate, located in Haverford, Pennsylvania, was owned by Horatio Gates Lloyd and his wife Mary Helen Wingate Lloyd. Born in Middletown, Delaware, in 1867, Horatio Gates Lloyd held two law degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, but made his fortune as a banker. He worked for the Philadelphia Trust Co., Philadelphia Electric Co., Bell Telephone, and was a partner at J.P. Morgan Associates. He was a founder and later the vice president of the Welfare Federation, and in 1931 became the chairman of the Commission of Unemployment Relief. Lloyd died in 1937.
