Baily, Joshua, b. 1834.

Civil War soldier from Delavan, Tazewell County, Ill. Served 1862-1865 with the 73rd Illinois Infantry, Company B.

In July 1862, Baily (sometimes spelled "Bailey") joined the 73rd as a sergeant. He was promoted to first lieutenant in May 1864 and served until June 1865. At the battle of Chickamauga in Sept. 1863, he was shot in the neck; after 6 weeks of recuperation, he rejoined his unit. After the war, he married Mary Davis and moved to southwestern Missouri, but continued to rent and invest in land in Tazewell County. Baily was the son of Dr. Jeremiah (1805-1880) & Miriam Brown Baily (1805-1881). His uncle, Jesse W. Fell, and brother-in-law, William O. Davis, were founders of the Bloomington (Ill.) Pantagraph newspaper. Joshua Baily died in Missouri, probably in Jasper County in the mid-1880s, leaving a wife and 2 children.
