Hopkins, Arthur, 1848-1930

Arthur Hopkins was born on December 30, 1848 to Manley and Catherine (Smith) Hopkins. He attended Lancing College as a young boy and joined the Royal Academy of Arts in 1872. During this period, he produced woodblock prints for various newspapers. In 1873, Hopkins married Rebecca Beckett.

Hopkins was influenced by the works of Frederick Walker, and soon made watercolor his primary medium. In 1877, he was inducted into the Royal Watercolour Society, and became treasurer in 1898. He was also inducted into the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Hopkins died of heart failure at the age of 81 on September 10, 1930.
