Presbyterian minister and educator; born in Peru, Massachusetts; appointed, 1813, minister of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Charleston, S.C.; graduate of Williams College; awarded an honorary degree of A.M. by Brown University in 1814; completed Doctorate of Divinity, 1815, from South Carolina College [USC]; served as Professor of Theology, 1833-1863, Southern Presbyterian Seminary (Columbia, S.C.)
