Current, Ira B.
Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1910, Ira Current became active in photography in 1924, photographing area people, scenery, and events. He worked part-time and summers and one full year in Stewart Brothers photo finishing and photoengravers from 1928 until 1933. The fine arts department at the University of Colorado in Boulder provided work and a darkroom studio that was supplemented by portrait and other photography to finance his bachelor's degree in 1934. He joined Agfa Ansco Corporation in Binghamton, New York, where he continued until 1972, punctuated by service at the Naval Photographic Center during World War II. He then taught color printing theory, and materials and processes of photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology until 1987. Current was also an author and contributor of several books dealing with color and toning, most notably "Materials and Processes of Photography and Photographic Color Printing: Theory and Technique." He held several one-man shows of his work, and participated in many group exhibitions. He was a Fellow of the Photographic Society of America and of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Ira Current died May 19, 2009 at age 98.
