Atkinson, Archibald, 1792-1872
At the time of this letter, Atkinson was a U.S. representative on the Committees on Naval Affairs and Commerce. George Bancroft was Secretary of the Navy, 1845-1846, during which time he established the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
