Morice, Charles, 1861-1919
This late nineteenth century poet, playwright, literary critic, and spokesman for the French Symbolist Movement was born in St. Etienne on May 15, 1860. In 1882 Morice left Lyons for Paris where he became involved with a group of writers and artists in launching the Symbolist Movement.
In his literary criticism and essays Morice expounded on the synthesis of metaphysical thought, fiction, and expression in literature as seen through the work of Goethe, Baudelaire, Poe, Balzac, and Mallarme.́ As a leader of the Symbolist Movement Morice collaborated with Gauguin and Rodin on books and he continued to lecture and organize expositions on the subject until his death in 1919.
