Carl Christian Hein was ordained by the JSO on April 15, 1888. Hein served parishes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio between 1888 and 1925. From 1912-1920, he served as president of the Western District of the JSO. From 1920-1924, he was the JSO's vice president; and from 1924- 1930, served as its president. Upon formation of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in 1930, he was elected its first president. When the National Lutheran Council (NLC) was organized in 1918, Dr. Hein became a commissioner. From 1927-1932 he was vice president of the NLC, and its president from 1932-1937. Hein was suddenly stricken by a heart attack.

Attack while attending a meeting of the Illinois District of the ALC in June of 1936. He never fully recovered, and died in Columbus, Ohio on April 28, 1937.
