Newman, Mary B., 1909-1995.
A Quaker and civil libertarian, Newman was a state representative from Cambridge, Mass., 1953-1970, and was particularly active in prison reform and labor legislation. In 1971 she was appointed Secretary of Manpower Affairs by Governor Francis Sargent. In 1976 President Ford named her New England Regional Director of Health, Education and Welfare. She has also lectured on management at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
