Born in Plymouth, N.H., Mar. 18, 1830; grad. at Dartmouth College, 1850; .stud.law at Harvard, 1850-52; settled at Detroit, Mich. 1852; appointed by Pres. Lincoln U.S. Distr. Attorney for Mich., 1861; resigned 1869. Private practice until his death in Detroit 1906.
