Hadawi, Sami

Sami Hadawi, a Palestinian Christian scholar, was born in Jerusalem in 1904. His career began under the British Mandate in Palestine as the official land valuer and director of land taxation. During this tenure, he was awarded the M.B.E. for "Outstanding Service". After Israel acquired Palestine, he served the Jordanian government as Chief of Inland Revenue. Later, he served in the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission as Land Specialist, who chief responsibility was to identify and evaluate Arab property in Israel. From 1956-1968, he actively worked to inform the world community of the Palestinians' plight. He established a Palestine Arab Refugee Office, and he was an adviser on Palestine Affairs (Iraq Mission to the U.N.) and (Yemen Mission to the U.N.) In 1960 he established the Arab Information Center, and in 1969 he served with the Information Center of the League of Arab States, and he became the Director of the Institute of Palestine Studies in Beirut. He has written numerous books and pamphlets on the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. Many of his books are in this library.

Alfred M. Lilienthal, an author, historian, and editor, was born in New York City in 1913. He began his career by serving with the U.S. State Department from 1942-1943 and 1945-1948. He has become an authority and advocate for the Middle East. He has served as a lecturer on the Middle East from 1951-1994, as a TV and radio news commentator on Middle East developments, 1951-1991, as a counsel to the American-Arab Association Commerce & Industry, 1960-1965, and as an editor and publisher of the Middle East Perspective, 1967-1985. He has also served as chairman of the American Council on the Middle East, consultant for the U.N. International Conference on Question, Palestine, in Geneva in 1983, and as a participant in the Model International Conference on Middle East in Prague in 1988. He has taken 27 trips to the Middle East, including the West Bank and Gaza over an extensive number of years, 1953-1994. He has written books on the Middle East and monthly commentaries for Washington Report on Middle East Affairs from 1988 until now. His writings and papers are housed in the archives of the Hoover Institution, Stanford, California.
