Stallknecht, Newton P. (Newton Phelps), 1906-1981
Indiana University professor of Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and Criticism.
Prof. Stallknecht first came to IU in 1949 after earning his AB, AM, and PhD at Princeton University and serving in World War II with the Army Security Agency. During his time at IU, he was a professor of Philosophy, serving as Chair of the department from 1949-1961, professor of Philosophy and Comparative Literature, 1964-1968, professor of Comparative Literature and Criticism 1968-1977, serving as Acting Chair of Comparative Literature 1962-1963. In 1952, he was appointed Fellow of the School of Letters and then promoted to Director of the program in 1953, a position he held until his resignation in 1972. Prof. Stallknecht retired in 1977. He passed away in 1981.
