United Steelworkers of America. Upholstery and Allied Industries Division
By 1850, upholsterers organized one of the first national unions in America. The Upholsterers' International Union (UIU) formed in 1892 and affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1900. On 21 October 1985, the UIU, then consisting of 35,000 furniture workers, became the Upholstery and Allied Industries Division of the United Steelworkers of America, with John H. Serembus serving as director of the division.
