Fire department in Columbia, S.C., incorporated by the S.C. Legislature in 1858; formerly known as the Palmetto Fire Engine Company; Act 20, approved, 31 Jan. 1872, by the S.C. General Assembly, renewed and extended the organization's charter and approved the change of name (see Acts and Joint Resolutions of the General Assembly... of South Carolina).
