Brown, Edward J. (Edward James), 1909-1991
Pioneer in the academic study of Russian literature in the United States. Brown taught at Brown University from 1947 to 1965, then at Indiana University in the late 1960s when he was also president of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and Eastern European Languages and of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1970; he retired in 1975 but continued to teach. He died in 1991.
