Florida. National Guard

The Florida National Guard was established in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws) replacing the Florida State Troops. From 1921 until 1973, the Guard was placed under the Military Dept (Ch. 8502, Laws). In 1973, the Military Dept. became the Dept. of Military Affairs (Ch. 73-93, Laws). The Adjutant General has served as the military head of the Guard since its inception. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The National Guard maintains its headquarters in St. Augustine.
