North Carolina State University. Council on Athletics.
The Athletic Council was established at North Carolina State College (later University) in or before 1923 to oversee all athletic activities at the college, including activities in the college's Physical Education Department as well as intercollegiate activities with other colleges. At the time of the establishment of the Athletic Council, NC State actively participated intercollegiately as a member of both the Southern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Athletic Council held administrative control over all athletic activities at NC State until the first Athletics Director (Roy Clogston) was hired in 1948. Since then, the Athletic Council (later, Athletics Council and then, in 1990, following a re-writing of the bylaws, Council on Athletics) has worked in consultation with the Athletics Director to oversee athletic activities at NC State. The Council on Athletics continues to maintain responsibility for representing NC State at meetings of both the Atlantic Coast Conference (of which NC State has been a member since the conference's founding in 1953) and the NCAA.
