Petri, Friedrich Richard

Born in Dresden, Saxony in 1825, artist Friedrich Richard Petri (1824-1857) matriculated in the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden at the age of fourteen. He won six awards during his eleven years under the tutelage of Adrian Ludwig Richter and Julius Hübner and won six awards. After joining the failed 1849 May Uprising in Dresden, Petri immigrated with his family to the United States. In 1851, they arrived in Texas and eventually settled on a farm near Fredericksburg. Poor health did not prevent Petri from painting portraits of friends and family, pioneer life, and local Native Americans. Petri drowned in 1857.
