Born in Crow Creek Indian Reservation, South Dakota, to the Lower Yanktonai Crow Creek Sioux. His father's Tribe was Two Kettles. Catching Bear's birth date ranges from 1855 to 1886 in various census sources, but his death date seems certainly to be 1929; he is buried at Ascension Cemetery in Canning, Hughes County, South Dakota.
