State and federal judge, of Nev.; b. in Milan, Ind.; private practice in Nevada City, Calif., from 1858 to 1868; district attorney of Nevada County, Calif., from 1863 to 1864; private practice in Hamilton, Nev., from 1868 to 1870; private practice in Eureka, Nev., from 1870 to 1872; Nevada Supreme Court justice, from 1872 to 1890; federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Nevada; nominated by Pres. Benjamin Harrison on 30 Aug. 1890, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on 9 Sept. 1890, and received his commission the same day; retired 1906.
