Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), established 1967, superseded the National Capital Transportation Agency (NCTA) and is the private agency charged with the coordination and operation of mass transit (both bus and rail) in the National Capital Region. First ground was broken for Metrorail in 1969 and it started service in 1976.
