Martin, David Grier, 1910-1974

D. Grier Martin was the 13th president of Davidson College. Born in Covington, Ga., in 1910, he graduated from Davidson College in 1932 and attended Emory University from 1932-1933. In 1933 he returned to Davidson to become alumni secretary and publicity director. He left Davidson in 1936 to accept a position as department manager of the Campbell Coal Co. in Atlanta, Ga. From 1940-1951 he was a partner and sales manager for Grey Hosiery Mills in Bristol, Va. During that time he also attended Harvard Business School's War Adjustment Class, graduating 2nd in the class in 1944. He was also a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1951, he returned to Davidson to become treasurer and business manager, and in 1958 he succeeded Dr. cunningham as president of the college. He retired from the presidency in 1968, and died in 1974 from Alzheimer's disease.
