Ladies' Benevolent Society (Charleston, S.C.)
Charitable organization founded in 1813 for the relief of the sick and poor in Charleston (S.C.) and environs; projects included donations of firewood, coal, or ice; the Society claims to be the oldest women's organization in continuous existence in the United States; during the 19th century the Society offered medical services for free blacks and poor whites, and continues to serve the sick and poor of the Charleston area.
