Meehan, Martin T. (Martin Thomas), 1956-

Martin Thomas Meehan (b. Dec. 30, 1956, Lowell, Mass.) began his political career on the staff to the mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1978 and 1979. From 1979 to 1981, he was press assistant to United States Representative James M. Shannon of Massachusetts, and from 1981 to 1984, he was head research analyst, joint committee on election laws, to the Massachusetts State Senate. He then became director of public affairs for the Massachusetts secretary of state in 1985 and 1986. On January 3, 1993, he was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Third and to the seven succeeding Congresses until his resignation on July 1, 2007. He began serving as Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts in 2007.
