Gibbons, Stuart, 1896-1987.

Businessman, civic leader. Born at Sonora, Calif. and educated in public schools of Tuolumne county, Calif. Life insurance salesman in Stockton, Calif. (1922-1974). Led drives to create Calaveras Big Trees State Park and Caswell State Park (1952). Member, Stockton City Council (1958-1960) and Stockton Cultural Heritage Board (1969-1985). He was instrumental in saving historic El Dorado School in Stockton from destruction (1976). Member of several amateur historian's organizations, he influenced the state legislature to grant Rockwell Hunt the title "Mr. California." In politics, he led Stockton opposition to the California Open Housing and School Busing initiatives (1968). Voted Senior Citizen of the Year in Stockton (1974) and "Mr. Stockton" (1976).
