Crothers, James A. (James Alexander), 1893-

Born in Cecil County, Md. in 1893. Graduated from Delaware College in 1916 with a B.S. in civil engineering. Served as Corporal with the 1st Delaware Infantry while serving on the Mexican border, 1916-1917. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, 1917. Served overseas in World War I with the 808th Pioneer Infantry, 1918-1919. Discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, 1919. Employed as an engineer on the construction of the Wilmington Marine Terminals, 1919-1928 and General Manager of the South Jersey Port Commission, 1928-1942. Commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, 1942. Served as Port and Port District Commander in Scotland, England, France and Germany, 1942-1946. Discharged with rank of Colonel, 1946. Returned to pre-war civilian position of General Manager, South Jersey Port Commission, 1946. Became Executive Director, Port of Boston Authority, 1947. Retired from the Reserves with the rank of Brigadier General.
