Neighborhood Playhouse (New York, N.Y.).

In 1915, sisters Alice and Irene Lewisohn founded The Neighborhood Playhouse, a theater and teaching facility for dance and drama that began as part of the Henry Street Settlement on New York City's Lower East Side.

By 1920, professional actors replaced the amateur troupe of children and adults, and the Playhouse became known for its avante-garde productions. The neighborhood theater closed in 1927. In 1928, Alice Lewisohn Crowley, Irene Lewisohn and Rita Wallach Morgenthau established The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, still in operation in New York City.
