Brown, Martha McClellan, 1838-1916.
Born in Maryland, April 6, 1838, Martha McClellan Brown was a nationally known leader in the 19th and early 20th century temperance movement as well as an advocate of women's rights and suffrage. She was a popular platform lecturer in both the U.S. and England and held important posts in the Independent Order of Good Templars and the National Prohibition Party. She was also one of the founders of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. From 1882 until 1892 she served as vice-president of the Wesleyan Women's College in Cincinnati. She died in Dayton, Ohio in 1916.
