The Exhibits and Public Services Department began in about 1965 and has seen many changes in its constituent elements. It was first identified as Assistant Director for Information and Education. After a lapse of several years the unit was called the Division of Presentations and Education in 1976 and 1977. Functions were split in 1978 between education and presentation. In 1998 the Exhibits and Public Services Department reunited the exhibits and education functions. It provides a number of exhibition and eductional services for Museum visitors.
Ernest W. Robischon was Assistant Director for Information and Education from about 1965 to 1971. Von Del Chamberlain headed a Division of Presentations and Education, 1976-1977. From about 1979 to 1982, Janet K. Wolfe and, in 1983, Patrica E. Johnston were chiefs, Education Services Division. From 1984 to 1988 an Associate Director for Research, Paul A. Hanle, was responsible for the Division. In 1989-1990 an Assistant Director for Interpretive Programs, James H. Sharp, was in charge. In 1993 Jacqueline Hicks Grazette became Assistant Director, Educational Services Division. She was succeeded by Nadya A. Makovenyi, Associate Director for the Exhibits and Public Services Department, 1996-1999. Paul D. Huffer succeeded her, 2000- .
