Coles, James Stacy, 1913-1996
James Stacy "Spike" Coles was a chemist. While at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), he was the supervisor of the Underwater Explosives Research Laboratory (UERL). This research was critical to the allied anti-submarine warfare effort. He was on the faculty of City College of New York, a professor at Brown University and eventually became the President of Bowdoin College. Cole served for many years as a trustee and member of the Corporation at WHOI.
