Smith, Chester M., 1820-1903.

Chester Smith was the son of Fuller Smith (11 Sept. 1785-4 Nov. 1873), who, in 1809, married Miriam Rowell (11 Apr 1787-22 Jan 1869). Fuller and Miriam Rowell Smith lived in Hancock, Goshen, and eventually West Rochester, Vermont. Chester Smith, the third of their six children, was born on 5 March 1820, and died on 15 September 1903. He married his first cousin, Sarah M. Smith (30 May 1821-30 March 1864) on 2 December 1850 and the couple had two children, Jacob (6 August 1852-8 August 1917), and Hattie (ca. 1858-7 March 1872). Chester Smith married a second time, to Mary Ann (Jackman) Swan, on 1 July 1866. Mary Ann Swan Smith died in either 1886 or 1888. Chester Smith was a life-long Vermont farmer. He owned a large farm off West Hill Road in Rochester, Vermont, from 1847 until his death in 1903. After Chester Smith's death, the farm was operated by his son Jacob for a little more than a decade. The site of this farm is currently (2011) the property of Green Mountain National Forest. A number of stone cairns and other manmade structures, which predate the farm, are also present on this property.
