Sutherland, W. C.

W. C. Sutherland authored a 1918 historical sketch of William Adams (b. 1846) and his brother Robert (1847-1944) titled “The Adams Brothers of Jim Wells County.” Born in Norfolk, England, the brothers came to Corpus Christi, Texas, with their parents, Robert and Sarah (Anderson) Adams, in March 1847. During the Civil War, William and Robert hauled cotton to Brownsville for shipment to Europe. Following the conflict, the brothers raised sheep in what was then Nueces County, preempting 302 acres on Tecolte Creek in 1869 to start the Tecolote Ranch. They fenced their land in 1878 and began to breed and raise cattle, becoming one of the first ranches to bring Durham bulls to Texas. When the Adams brothers ended their partnership in 1893, William bought a large ranch near Alice, while Robert kept Tecolote. Both were involved in the establishment of Jim Wells County in 1912. Having served as county commissioner for Nueces County for 16 years, William took a position as ex-officio County Judge in the new government.
