Thomas Grahame started practising law around 1745 and in 1772 formed a legal practice in Glasgow, Scotland, in partnership with his brother under the name Grahame (Thomas and Archibald). The firm went through many name changes reflecting partnerships and mergers with other legal practices. They names were: Grahame (Thomas and Robert), 1781; Grahame (Robert), 1791; Grahame & Mitchell , 1802; Mitchell (Andrew) & Grahame (Thomas) , 1824; Mitchell, Grahame & Mitchell , 1825; Mitchell, Henderson & Mitchell , 1840; Mitchell, Allardice & Mitchell , 1850; Mitchell, Macnie & Mitchell , 1868; Mitchells, Macnie & Cowan , 1870; Mitchells, Cowan & Johnston , 1873; Mitchells, Johnston & Co , 1888.
During its history, the firm drew clients from prominent businesses and families and was the University of Glasgow solicitor from c1806 until the late 1950s .
