Served as professor and dean of the University of Texas School of Law; as attorney general of Puerto Rico; as vice-governor, acting governor-general, and Supreme Court justice in the Philippine Islands; and as assistant United States attorney general. Butte also ran unsuccessfully for governor of Texas against Miriam Ferguson in 1924.
