Crosby, Fanny, 1820-1915

Hymn writer; born in 1820; became blind shortly after birth; studied and taught at New York City Institution for the blind, where she achieved a reputation as a poet; was converted during a revival meeting, 1850; married blind musician and composer Alexander Van Alstyne, 1858; wrote first hymn, 1864; hymns were transcribed as dictated and published primarily by Bigelow and Main Company; wrote approximately 6,000 hymns; died 1915.
