James Vantine Mink III was born on June 3, 1923 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI; attended Occidental College, 1941-43; BA (1946) and MA (1949), UCLA; B.L.S., UC Berkeley (1952); certificate in archival administration, American Univ., 1953; asst. head, Dept. of Special Collections (1952-65) University Archivist beginning in 1961, director of oral history program (1965-72), and head of the Dept. of Special Collections beginning in 1972, UCLA Library; president, Society of California Archivists, 1971-73.
