Swanton family.
Benjamin Franklin Swanton (1807-1890) was born in Bath, Maine. He came to Dahlonaga, Georgia (1828), then moved to Decatur, Georgia, where he operated a gin-grist mill, machine shop, tanyard, and brick kiln on Peavine Creek, near his home. His son, John B. Swanton (d. 1897), married Josephine F. Woodbury (d. 1909). Her father, Dr. Joseph F. Woodbury (1811-1884), was born in Massachusetts but came to coastal Georgia (1839). He later moved to Atlanta and opened a drugstore (1856). The Swanton House, in Decatur, remained in the family until it was willed to the DeKalb [Georgia] Historical Society.
