Massachusetts Hospital Life Insurance Company
Investment trust firm, Boston, Mass. Chartered in 1818. Began operation in 1823. Its original intent was to sell life insurance, and one-third of its net profits were to be shared with Massachusetts General Hospital. It very quickly moved from insurance to the investment trust business. Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) was the principal figure in the early years of the company. Name changed to Massachusetts Company in 1967.
